JOSIE AYALA FOUND BITCHESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
i love you all very much but i need you to be a little less white today and baila esta cumbia in celebration of this queen and her CUERVO-PENG BODY
PITTSFIELD—David Parkover, director of the International Asteriae Association’s Leigh Bloch Observatory, announced today that Latin pop legend Josefina “Josie” Ayala’s asteriological structure has been found.
“It took over 400 years, but we’ve got her,” Parkover told reporters. “Ayala’s structure is a flocculent galaxy composed of her fingers. At least 40 are always discernible, ranging from infancy to old age—we’re still mapping them to pictures and videos, but so far, everything is accounted for. It will enter the Revised International Asteriae Catalogue as structure 0087.”
Ayala, who died of cervical cancer at the age of 68, surprised many when she donated her body to Iolanthe University’s then-new astral transmutation center. Centuries of speculation regarding her structure’s location and form ensued, which this discovery puts to rest. But RIAS 0087’s status as a Cuervo-Peng body, also known as a kaleidoscope body, is sure to spark new discourse. Some experts believe that high intelligence in the subject creates the visual complexity these ever-popular structures are known for, while others maintain that a family history of autoimmune diseases, perfect pitch, and at least one pregnancy before the age of 24 are the determining factors. Ayala’s life—as traumatic as it was triumphant—provides endless fodder for such arguments.

I vote Pia, because look who just posted:
Checks on the Lark V’s external hatches are going well; I anticipate performing a final test by the end of the year. The big concern still ahead of me is food. The Pearl is a superhabitable planet, of course, but even if things are as productive as we hope, crops need time to grow. To make up the gap, I’m thinking of trying out the soya-hibiscus cubes Marty Rickert had such success with—thanks to boodleditch for mentioning them in the comments.

It’s official!
GENEVA—After weeks of closed-doors debate, the International Asteriae Association has announced that Marilyn Monroe’s remains will be exhumed and transmuted.
“Monroe was a dazzling talent,” Sandra Murphy, vice president of Murphy-Wu Ventures, told the press on Tuesday afternoon. “We are honored to play a role in ensuring her life and legacy are never forgotten.”

NOT jazzed about the truly heinous commentary that will come with this, but tbh it’s hard not to be excited. I always kind of want to believe in Pinter’s theory of active structure sentience, but as it’s probably BS, this feels like the next best thing—a last moment of genuine self-expression from a woman who didn’t get enough chances to do that in life.

Unrelated, and kind of a random question for y’all—I’m thinking of swinging by Naomi St. Clair’s structure on the way back from an upcoming work trip. Is there a time of day when I’ll be less likely to encounter her hardcore fans? I do not have time to sit around if they’re doing one of their trash tithes.

If it’s not prolonging this nonsense, I actually would appreciate someone explaining Naomi’s appeal. I find her sort of abstractly interesting, but also weirdly hard to get my hooks into?
little-miss-fancy-pants
March 23, 16:42
Okay, I’m clocking in as the daughter of a Naomi diehard. The thing to understand is that fans love Naomi the pop icon who gave us Littlest Sister, but they maybe love Naomi the mess even more. They see it—and I do mean all of it, including the addiction and the fascist son – as her rebellion against the industry, the establishment, social niceties, whatever. She’s their Florida junkyard princess (even though she was actually from Wellington, a pretty affluent part of the state, but whatever). It’s why they fling chaw and Ho-Hos at her structure. The fact that said structure is her head, with very little abstraction to speak of, is part of it too, especially because it’s not her teen superstar head but her head from about a year before she died. We can see the so-so filler, the sunspots, all that, and she looks pissed off to boot. It’s all very “real” in the way they value. Obviously this means she isn’t popular the way Pia or Camille Pesci are, but she was never going to achieve that anyway.
Ugh, I sound so salty. I don’t actually hate her, but you would not believe how sick a person can get of peeing opposite a special edition Dirty Dreams poster, lol.

March 26, 09:16
Re: Naomi: it’s funny, but that does actually make me think about Sarabeth Reese? Their mystiques are weirdly similar …except Sarabeth seems like she has a better claim on being a “junkyard princess,” lol (NOT how I would put it, but you know). Kinda weird how differently their careers ended up going. And how different their fandoms are, actually. Even if they’re both a little… passionate 😛
persimmonmilk
March 26, 01:52
it’s because sarabeth had actual talent so all the shit she went through fed something real
Nevermore45
March 26, 19:05
That’s a brutal way to put it, but I sort of agree. No disrespect to Naomi, but she was a very pure pop star, which means she was very good at being a sexy puppet. The mess was totally ancillary to her work (even if it ended up being a big part of her legacy). Sarabeth Reese did eventually attain mainstream success—pop success, even—but she was a singer-songwriter first, last, and always, and her “mess” was hardship that became the fuel for great art. Imo it’s easier to think of her like a male artist in this respect. She’s Johnny Cash, not Britney Spears.
Aurawra
March 27, 13:51
“Sexy puppet” is unfair………she is widely regarded as one of the greatest dancers of the era!!!!!
Nevermore45
March 27, 20:15
I mean, yes. But she wasn’t the choreographer. She wasn’t the mind behind any of it. It doesn’t mean she wasn’t talented, but she didn’t drive her career the way Sarabeth did.
Aurawra
March 28, 08:00
OKAY, I’m not getting into that. I will say, though, that Sarabeth’s work has always bored me. I know it’s important, but I just fall asleep. I’m a little tired of everyone apparently deciding at some point that music lots of people like is automatically worse…………
beetlebride
March 28, 21:24
key point about sarabeth too is that her “mess” and its attendant art seem to inform her structure in a very obvious way. there’s just such insane continuity there, it’s hard to resist. no wonder her fandom is, uh, the way it is.
Nevermore45
March 29, 08:02
It being potentially the first multi-part structure also plays a major role in that intensity, I imagine.

March 29, 18:44
I thought the IAA determined they were all unrelated to each other??? Only the one on Jupiter is her, right?
persimmonmilk
March 29, 23:54
first off sarabeth’s structure is on europa, which is one of jupiter’s moons, and second, only complete fucking morons insist it’s not a multi-part structure any longer. i could maybe understand if people were only insisting the “YOU CAN’T COOK FOR SHIT!!!!!!!!!” on dione isn’t her, the letters are only three feet long, sure fine whatever you’re wrong but okay. but the other two like. come the fuck on. the “EATING YOU NEVER EATING NEVER GOING EAT YOU GOING EAT YOU NEVER EATING YOU” etc sentence on europa and the “salt lick salt salt lick salt” etc in the kepler 186f seabed are very clearly in the same handwriting, the letters are all about a mile long, they’re all fixated on food, they’re carved at the same level of depth, come the FUCK on
Aurawra
March 30, 07:39
I know we don’t have good photos of the Kepler one though… and if it’s so obvious why hasn’t the IAA declared it????
little-miss-fancy-pants
March 30, 16:51
Persimmon is generally right—and yeah, even though we don’t have great photos, it’s pretty conclusively her handwriting. I suspect the IAA hasn’t openly declared anything for a few reasons. The first is that reclassifying it will be a pain in the ass. The second is that it’s kind of a bear to deal with, now that eating disorder-conscious protocols are in place. Third, Reese was Kootenai, and the IAA is insanely reluctant to work with tribal governments. It’s a perfect storm.

little-miss-fancy-pants
April 4, 09:32
Heh. So technically it was the “Pearl of Great Price: What it Takes to Make it to RIAS 0918” panel, but yeah, everyone going into it was going for Clark. It was him, Dr. Kay Fitzpatrick (the Emerson prof who did the book on child stars and comets), Lora Barbaro (the Every Single Cygnus Structure podcaster), and a media studies person (not naming her because I don’t want to bring drama here). I think she was a last minute sub, because she pretty clearly didn’t know much of anything about the field.
It started off fine—lots of questions about fuel storage, after Clark’s last post. Big chunk of time on the start-ups racing to make more Pias. Then Clark talked about the first time he saw Maenad, and they went down the panel talking about Pia’s movies. Media studies lady mentioned not being much for horror in general, and while people are laying into her for this, I actually think that could have been a worthwhile perspective. But you could tell she actively dislikes Pia’s movies AND doesn’t know much about them. At some point she said something kind of derisive about the Maenad poster. Clark went to bat for it, and she just really didn’t give him the time of day. So then the entire Q&A session was just people arguing with her, and she took the bait pretty hard, and it escalated, blah blah blah.
It’s tough, because I do think there’s room to have… not that discussion, but one like it. Pommel-Hughes was a controversial director, and he dominated her career. And I kind of wish that Maenad poster WEREN’T what it is (or such a dorm room staple, tbh). But no one denies he was a genius, and compared to so many men in the industry, he was a prince. It was just a real waste of an hour.
Besides that, though, it was fun! Vincent Chen and Carmen Dawson gave a particularly great panel entirely focused on Giant Naked Pia the nebula, rather than Pia’s Pearl the planet. May Carruthers did a GREAT presentation putting Pia into context as a Cajun. Also, I know not all of you love shadow casts, but Babylon the Great was actually a lot of fun this year.

My lab’s going to have a livestream party. All the buzz has made me a little nostalgic, so I went and dug up scans of Altogether Asteriae, which I know a lot of us grew up loving. 🙂 Who else had this page dog-eared?
RIAS 0219: Phoebe Elizabeth Luther
An immense asteroid boasting meticulous detail, RIAS 0219 was one of the very first celebrity asteriae. Luther, who parlayed child stardom as mermaid Pearl Wakame on Bayberry Beach into subcultural it girl status, died of a seizure at the shockingly young age of 24. She was preparing to release a baroque pop album titled “milk & meat” at the time of her death; the now-iconic album cover, which depicts a deer covered in subcutaneous fibromas, had been revealed only 21 hours earlier.
RIAS 0219 had an explosive effect on public interest. It depicts Luther lying on a jagged bier of jadeite; green spikes pierce her calves, right eye, belly, and left hand. She is holding a bouquet of chicory and thistles and wears an ivory dress. Though its general structure and enormous dagged sleeves echo the houppelande gowns of the late Middle Ages, it appears to be made from polyester costume satin. This contrast remains one of the most intriguing elements of RIAS 0219, and a fitting symbol of Luther’s dual-sided career.

I have never understood why she catches so much hate. Like yes, once we turn 15 we’re all very eager to pretend we’re so beyond the thing we were obsessed with at 14, but why does it attach so much to Phoebe specifically? Edie Roth’s DaRk CiRcUs kinematic group doesn’t inspire anywhere near as much nastiness.

little-miss-fancy-pants
April 11, 08:45
At the risk of sparking drama, I agree with Craq. In fact, I also don’t understand why Pia is treated so differently from Phoebe. Phoebe’s structure is moving because it’s a pretty girl in a vulnerable position. Pia’s structure doesn’t incorporate violence in the same way, but it is a giant nebula shaped like her naked body, floating lonely in the void. Yes, a lot of drooling guys like it because she’s hot, but the real source of its staying power is how even at her huge scale, she looks small and lost. The tragedy is a huge part of it.

RIAS 0014: Leila Annette Barnes, aka Leilani
When celebrated rapper Leilani died in a car accident at 39, she was preparing to embark upon a new album. Perhaps this momentum accelerated her transmutation: a mere four hours passed between the “Harryette” hitmaker’s departure and the moment RIAS 0014 was discovered on the sleeve of a 73-year-old woman arrested for illegally mining the ruins of Cynthia 3. Granted, it took officials weeks to identify the strange smear as olivine and months to discern the words scratched into each green particle’s infinitesimal facets. Still, Barnes holds the record for quickest structure discovery.
Thirty-three Barnes Grains have been catalogued so far. Here are some of the most popular:’
Barnes Grain 1: RED SUNSET EARLY SUMMER OAKVILLE SHOPPING CENTER: LOOK AMY, LOOK AT THAT BABY OKAY, LOOK AT THAT BABY AND TELL ME THAT FACE DOES NOT SAY “PUT ME BACK IN”
Barnes Grain 8: RUBBER SHOE SOLES SMELL FLUORESCENT LIGHT ON HER CURLS: OKAY ARE YOU READY? OKAY? ARE YOU SURE? OKAY WHAT DID THE 0 SAY TO THE 8. NICE BELT
Barnes Grain 27: ICY SIDEWALK LEAVING DANI’S HOUSE TRIPPED FLAILED AND MANAGED TO DO A COMPLETE FUCKING SPLIT KID WHO SITS ON GROSS COUCH ON PORCH OPPOSITE APPLAUDS AND I GET UP AND TAKE A BOW
I forgot how charming these are. Should I finally listen to her stuff?

Okay. Here’s everything we currently know.
The ship sustained heavy external damage in the mesosphere; we don’t know from what. It exploded after he made the jump. He was pretty clearly struggling to breathe all the way down. Could be an injury we can’t see, but there also appears to be serious damage to the suit, which might mean he was breathing the planet’s air. Everything we know—or thought we knew, I guess—tells us that should be fine, but all that’s out the window now. He went underwater and bobbed up after 2.3 seconds. The water (we assume—again, grain of salt) appears to have given him chemical burns. Underwater again. 4.3 seconds after that he reemerged. Please try to avoid seeing images of this. Suffice it to say, we can assume he was dead at this point. The body went under again and did not reemerge. No idea yet what caused any of this.
