Development

The city grows

too fast, sends deer out

into the streets, hulking

miracles our greed

sweat out. Someone I knew

took his crossbow on a drive

one night in the middle

of a party at his dad’s house

and strung one up

by her hind legs

in the garage, a bucket

filling up below her

cut throat. We were

kids, but didn’t know it.

There were so many

he said, it’s a shame

not to eat

what you’re given.
